Autumn Leaves

November 6, 2010

Autumn is here, but I’m spending my days inside. When I finally get chance to go outside – it’s already too dark for autumn photos. Instead of that, I went outside and picked some leaves. I set my mini home studio and started playing with leaves.

Photography of Castles

October 20, 2010

During my trip to Scotland I’ve visited a lot of castles. Well, I haven’t been in any of them inside – but I’ve seen plenty of them from outside. Although I’ve seen them only in the daytime, when the light is bright – I was lucky enough to have a clear blue sky with no sigh of rain all the times! The most difficult thing while taking pictures of castles was how to fit them in one shot, preferably with no people or cars. Another hard thing – to find interesting details, which, in fact, I didn’t…

Rye in the Dawn

October 18, 2010

One evening we got stuck in the middle of nowhere. It was pretty boring there, so I took my camera to play. The dawn was all around, so it was really hard to focus the camera. It took a while till I did that, but I loved the result. I was using central focus point and tripod.

Capture the Moment

October 11, 2010

Sometimes interesting shots just happen. You go somewhere and you see something interesting or something just happens next to you. Once I’ve seen a bird taking a bath in a dog’s bowl and I’ve had my camera in my hands. I had no time to think or deal with camera settings, so the photos aren’t the best. In addition, I had to be careful not to scare the bird away while moving towards him.

Photography of Waterfall

October 8, 2010

During my journey in Scotland I’ve seen a lot of waterfalls. Usually it was too bright to make a proper photo of the, but one time I had a chance to visit Falls of Dochart in the evening and get some nice shots. In addition, there was a lighten bridge and some puddles of still water, so I played with running and still water in a picture. It wasn’t easy to find interesting angles, but more difficult was to find proper white balance. To keep ISO as low as possible I’ve used tripod and to make silk water I’ve used long shutter speed.

One day I’ve arrived to a very nice place, called Mull of Kintyre. It’s huge, nice and empty: grass fields, the sea and the lighthouse. The sun was shining bright, so it was too hard to make photos without white spots. I had to wait for the sunset. So I did. While waiting I was looking for the perfect angle and composition. Although the place was amazing, it was hard to put it all in one picture. And once I try to pay attention to the details – the photo looks too plain.

To get some new experience, I decided to take some photos outside not in the evening or morning, but in the middle of the day. The sun was shining bright, so I was searching for nice things in the shade. I’ve also tried to find some interesting angle, but it wasn’t that easy…

During this trip to Scotland I had a lot of chances to play with natural light (sun) and observe how does it change everything. What is more, my knowledge about aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how does it influence exposure was getting better every day.

I was really lucky, that the day I decided to climb Ben Nevis the weather was very good. Ben Nevis is well known for being in the cloud all the time. I started climbing in the afternoon and by the time I’ve reached high enough spot it was already evening, so the light was not too bright. Moreover, there were clouds in the background, and the sun was behind them just at the right height to let the sun beams go through. So I had a great chance to play with light.
